This short essay outlines some sonic approaches to grasp the dynamics of media while listening to their signals, rhythms, noises and fluctuations by mediating or non-mediating methods. It distinguishes between two modes: namely audification and sonification. Furthermore, it emphasises the importance of detailed, micro-logical, micro-temporal and technology conscious inquires about media matters. Lastly, it will briefly contemplate the surplus effects of a combination of rhythmanalysis with network analysis.

Counter-Algorhythmics as Prefigurative Dances of Commonism

In this essay, I both look back and forward what the concept of algo-rhythm has meant in my terms more than ten years ago at the time I came up with that ironic cacography and how it transformed into its current configuration. The essay proposes dancing as way to look at digitality in order to imagine and theorize about alternative ways to live, to move, to act within networks of body-machines we are entangled in. It proposes counter-algorhythmics as a form of resistance and tries eventually to link such a practice to the broader movement of commons-oriented activism. Not Reviewe

Take Back the Algorithms! A Media Theory of Commonistic Affordance

    Get PDF
International audienceThis essay critiques the 'black-boxing' of many computational processes, which are argued to result in a kind of 'unaffordability' of algorithms. By engaging with current theoretical debates on 'commoning'-signifying a non-profit-oriented, solidarity-based approach to sharing, maintaining, and disseminating knowledge and experience-the essay offers a formulation of commonistic affordance in algorithmic contexts. Through the discussion of widely used computational tools such as the Viola-Jones object detection framework, radical steps towards a 'making affordable' of algorithms are outlined, and the widespread corporate propertisation of computation processes is contrasted with a speculative vision of algorithmic commoning

Histological Observation of Regions around Bone Tunnels after Compression of the Bone Tunnel Wall in Ligament Reconstruction

    Get PDF
The objectives of this study were to investigate the time-course of influence of compression of bone tunnel wall in ligament reconstruction on tissue around the bone tunnel and to histologically examine the mechanism of preventing the complication of bone tunnel dilation, using rabbit tibia. A model in which the femoral origin of the extensor digitorum longus tendon was cut and inserted into a bone tunnel made proximal to the tibia was prepared in the bilateral hind legs of 20 Japanese white rabbits. In each animal, a tunnel was made using a drill only in the right leg, while an undersized bone tunnel was made by drilling and then dilated by compression using a dilator to the same tunnel size as that in the right leg. Animals were sacrificed at 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after surgery (4 animals at each time point). Observation of bone tunnels by X-ray radiography showed osteosclerosis in the 2- and 4-week dilation groups. Osteosclerosis appeared as white lines around the bone tunnel on X-ray radiography. This suggests that dilation promotes callus formation in the bone tunnel wall and prevents the complication of bone tunnel enlargement after ligament reconstruction

Honeycomb Layered Frameworks with Metallophilic Bilayers

Honeycomb layered frameworks with metallophilic bilayers have garnered traction in various disciplines due to their unique configuration and numerous physicochemical and topological properties, such as fast ionic conduction, coordination chemistry, and structural defects. These properties make them attractive for energy storage applications, leading to increased attention towards their metallophilic bilayer arrangements. This Review focuses on recent advancements in this field, including characterisation techniques like X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, particularly for silver-based oxides. It also highlights strategies related to cationic-deficient phases induced by topology or temperature, expanding the compositional space of honeycomb layered frameworks with a focus on cationic bilayer architectures. The Review further discusses theoretical approaches for understanding the bilayered structure, especially concerning critical phenomena at the monolayer-bilayer phase transition. Honeycomb layered frameworks are described as optimised lattices within the congruent sphere packing problem, equivalent to a specific two-dimensional conformal field theory. The monolayer-bilayer phase transition involves a 2D-to-3D crossover. Overall, this Review aims to provide a panoramic view of honeycomb layered frameworks with metallophilic bilayers and their potential applications in the emerging field of quantum matter. It is valuable for recent graduates and experts alike across diverse fields, extending beyond materials science and chemistry.Comment: 68 pages, 24 figure
